Horn Blue Initiative (HBI)
HOBi conduct fishing expeditions using various techniques such as trawling, longlining, or netting to catch fish and other seafood products and train other fishermen and women with those techniques.
HOBI supports fishery communities and links them to financial institutions, including banks and microfinance institutions to obtain processing facilities to ensure that seafood products are handled with the utmost care, maintaining their freshness and quality and customized packaging options to meet the specific needs of customers.
HOBI enables fishery communities to produce seafood that meets quality standards by training and with techniques for inspecting, grading, and packaging the products properly.
HOBI links fishing communities and other market actors in managing the distribution and logistics involved in transporting seafood from the fishing vessel to markets, restaurants, or retail outlets.
Horn Blue Initiative (HOBI) facilitates a robust distribution network, enabling fish market actors to efficiently deliver seafood products to customers worldwide, ensuring timely and reliable shipments.
HOBI educates and links fishing communities and businesses to local and international fishing regulations to ensure sustainable fishing practices and protect marine ecosystems.
Investing in research to improve fishing techniques, develop innovative technologies, and explore sustainable aquaculture practices.
HOBI engages in promoting and sales activities that link seafood traders to potential local and international markets.
HOBI engages with local communities, stakeholders, and conservation organizations to foster responsible fishing practices and support community development initiatives; establish cooperatives to promote collective fishing efforts and share resources; promote fish as a vital source of nutrition through community health initiatives, and organize workshops on preparing nutritious meals using local fish species.
HOBI offers a diverse range of wild-caught fish and shellfish, including tuna, salmon, shrimp, lobster, and more, sourced from sustainable fishing grounds around Somalia’s coasts.
HOBI educates fishing communities on the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) where fishing is restricted or prohibited to allow ecosystems to recover and thrive. HOBI facilitates obtaining sustainable fishing certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label that indicates fish products come from sustainably managed fisheries, using gear that reduces bycatch and minimizes environmental impact, such as circle hooks or turtle excluder devices (TEDs). We work with local authorities and governments to establish government or international bodies to monitor fish stocks and set catch limits based on scientific data.
Horn Blue Initiative (HOBI) is committed to positively impacting the communities in which we work. We actively engage in initiatives that support education, healthcare, and environmental conservation in coastal regions, empowering local fishermen and women to promote sustainable livelihoods.
